From mixtures to monocultures: Bird assemblage responses along a production forest conifer-broadleaf gradient

چکیده
Increasing the prevalence of broadleaf trees in conifer-dominated production forests is a recommended means improving habitat availability for and mixed-forest species. The implications biodiversity are often measured by contrasting broadleaf-conifer mixtures with stands. However, few studies include broadleaf-dominated stands these assessments. Here we contrasted bird assemblages even-aged along mixture gradient from Norway spruce (Picea abies) dominated, to birch (Betula spp.) dominated southern Sweden. We conducted point count surveys individuals exhibiting breeding behaviour within 30 varying <0.5% over 98.5% basal area. A total 355 birds were detected, comprising 36 species, seven which classified as near threatened Swedish Red-list. Our results indicate i) distinct shift community composition linked percentage at stand landscape scales, ii) significantly higher species richness, evenness, abundance proportion birch, iii) birch-dominated than mixtures, iv) shifts guilds related area, amount shrubs understory, quantities dead wood. All have ways forest management could be altered enhance avian diversity, discuss respect use versus mixed-species

Soil bacterial endemism and potential functional redundancy in natural broadleaf forest along a latitudinal gradient
Microorganisms play key roles in ecosystem processes and biogeochemical cycling, however, the relationship between soil microbial taxa diversity and their function in natural ecosystems is largely unknown. To determine how soil bacteria community and function are linked from the local to regional scale, we studied soil bacteria community composition, potential function and environmental conditi...
متن کاملFish assemblage responses to forest cover.
We investigated whether fish assemblage structure in southern Appalachian streams differed with historical and contemporary forest cover. We compared fish assemblages in 2(nd)-4(th) order streams draining watersheds that had increased forest cover between 1950 and 1993 (i.e., reforesting watersheds). We sampled fish in 50 m reaches during August 2001 and calculated catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) ...

متن کاملMarkedly Divergent Tree Assemblage Responses to Tropical Forest Loss and Fragmentation across a Strong Seasonality Gradient
We examine the effects of forest fragmentation on the structure and composition of tree assemblages within three seasonal and aseasonal forest types of southern Brazil, including evergreen, Araucaria, and deciduous forests. We sampled three southernmost Atlantic Forest landscapes, including the largest continuous forest protected areas within each forest type. Tree assemblages in each forest ty...
متن کاملUnderstorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia
Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...
